School Calendar Change - Superintendent Letter

Parents and Community Members,

We have experienced (and endured) many extreme weather events this year. To date we have lost eight days of school. For the safety of our students, the cancellations were necessary. Though many neighborhoods were safe today, not all were as lucky. Five of our subdivisions were affected by the flooding making it unsafe to attempt to transport them, impacting 400 to 500 students.

A major side effect of these closures is our students will not have received the State required minimum time of instruction. For upcoming years, we will create more flexible school calendars to greatly reduce the likelihood of this happening again. For our current situation, however, we had to find a viable solution.

We have 57 school days left this year to make up the lost time. I sought input about our options from parents, administrators, and Board members. Based on their feedback, we are making the following changes to our school calendar:

March 19th: Was listed as a staff workday/student holiday. It is now a regular school day.

May 24th (last day of school): Was listed as an early release day. It is now a full day with dismissal at the regular time.

Though hope is not a strategy, let’s hope and pray anyway that we do not have any more inclement weather days this year!

Morgan's Angels visit SPS

Morgan's Angels is a program which allows students to attend class via interactive video conferencing while recovering from long-term illness or other factors requiring the student to be home-bound. From home or the hospital, the student is able to "drive" the robot on their school campus to each of their classes and participate in lessons. This service is provided by our Region 6 Service Center in Huntsville. Shepherd Primary is excited for one of our Kindergarten students to be able to participate in this program.
